Tonight I'm going to share for you some fun moments of Big Bird and Oscar. (My mother has always been fond of him as well, and sometimes likes to use Oscar's old catchphrase "Ding-dong, you're wrong!")īy the end of the 90s, though, Elmo had pretty much become the main Muppet star of "Sesame Street." Even today, Big Bird is still basically now Elmo and Abby Cadabby's sidekick. Even if Oscar was a grouch, he was still such a fun character. Of course, I grew up watching the show in the early 90s when Spinney was still going strong as Big Bird and Oscar, and at such a young age, I was able to easily recognize both characters. Even when he was in his 70s, he'd still perform in the Big Bird puppet suit, which is not an easy feat at any age. It's amazing how dedicated Spinney was to his roles, and doing it for so long. In the tradition of Sesame Street characters reading a story acted out by Muppets, Olivia has read " The Two-Headed Monster" (in which the Two-Headed Monster is named Horn and Hardart), " Katie and the King," and " How the King Got His Kazoo. The entertainment world is abuzz with the fact that Caroll Spinney, the original and main performer for "Sesame Street"'s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch since the show began in 1969, is retiring from the show at age 84, after 49 years with the series. Hooper's death to Big Bird in Episode 1839, and searching for Big Bird in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Don't Eat the Pictures with some kids. She was also present for several milestones on Sesame Street, including Miles' adoption, the Trip to Hawaii and Trip to Puerto Rico, helping to explain Mr. Some of her notable appearances on the show include comparing photography with Oscar in Episode 1217, taking Herry Monster to (and inspiring him to become) an eye doctor in Episode 1261, dating a piano tuner named Bernie in Episode 1859, teaching Big Bird how to vote in Episode 1957, performing at Birdland in Episode 2304 and Episode 2447, and singing opera with Placido Flamingo in Episode 2317. Later in Episode 1749, she commandeered part of the Carriage house to use as her personal photo studio. In the 1985 film Follow That Bird, she searches for Big Bird with Gordon, Linda, Cookie Monster, and Grover in a yellow Volkswagen bug.Īs a photographer, she used the basement of 123 Sesame Street as her darkroom (as early as Episode 1359). During her time on the show, she resided in Gordon and Susan's apartment. Olivia appeared on Sesame Street from 1976 ( Season 8) to 1988 ( Season 19), though she was occasionally shown in repeated material for a few years after, and as a child in flashbacks in Episode 2621 (played by Lisa Martin) and 2965 (played by Sheanicka Crawford). It's established in the song " Little Sister is a Big Girl Now" that she is three years younger than Gordon. She was "welcomed" to Sesame Street by Oscar the Grouch a week later when she started looking for a job. She first appeared in Episode 0950 where she's reunited with her older brother Gordon after having worked in Detroit for a newspaper. Olivia Robinson is a resident of Sesame Street who made her profession as a photographer. Olivia's trade was photography, seen here in Episode 1663 (1982).
